How many of us have heard the name Daan Singh? Well, I suppose only a handful of music lovers, especially the ones dedicated to 70's Hindi film music, might still remember him. The rest might raise their hands of submission. Can't blame them either. So is the story! But, if I now ask about Neeraj Sridhar, popularly known as Bombay Vikings, I am sure most of today's pop-music buffs will shout affirmation in unison. This is because very few of us look back on the movies that came and went without leaving a mark on the Bombay Film Industry. Such one was Shashi Kapur and Sharmila Thakur starer 1970 film 'My Love'.
'My Love' was a pure romantic film which maybe was to some extent off-the-trend among the plethora of revenge dramas. Most strikingly, under the direction of S. Sukhdev, the film had a less-known music director, Daan Singh. Although Daan Singh rose to popularity overnight following his success as a music composer for 'Toofan' in 1969, but it was too short a span to get his place cemented for the rest of his life. It was during that temporary stint of glory that he got the opportunity to compose music for the film 'My Love'. (Lyricist was Anand Bakshi.) That very movie had a song 'Woh Jo Tera Pyar Ka Gham' sung by Mukesh. The audio song is available on Saregama (HMV) music store. The YouTube video link of the song is: https://youtu.be/qk-VkkbaORY
Fast-forwarding to 2002, a new Hindi pop singer had already been able to secure a safe space in the home music libraries by then. He had launched himself through his stage name Bombay Vikings. Much later he was identified with his original name when the doors opened for him to sing for commercial films. He was Neeraj Sridhar. In 2002, he launched an album 'Hawa Mein Udta Jaye' (Universal Music India Ltd.). That album had a duet song that featured Falguni Pathak. The song was 'Tera Mera Pyar Sanam'. The song had a music video too. The video is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/OakxlkgHifo. The song was rewritten in modern way supported by the contemporary musical arrangements on the same music as that of 'My Love'.
Then advancing straight up to February 2019, Prajakta Shukre, an Indian Idol finalist, sang a remastered version of Sridhar's song. She began with 'Yun Na Dekho Mujhe, Main Teri Hu...'. Mixed and mastered by Manan Bharadwaj, the song will reamin an ever-shining gem in Prajakta's admirable music career. The YouTube link of the song is: https://youtu.be/ZEy_1mtR4Bo
Later that year, another pop singer Pritisha Kalita lent her voice to the duet with Siddharth Pathak to remake Sridhar's version of 2002. The video too is available on YouTube. The link of the video is: https://youtu.be/mb-lDSEjwsM
So, in a way, Daan Singh may not have got the limelight he deserved as a music composer, but his music has helped four different songs find the seat of permanence among music lovers.
